LANDING ON HIS FEET: Trenton Robinson, Released by 49ers, Jumps to Eagles

On Monday, while most of us were Labor Day picnicking, Bay City's Trenton Robinson got a new job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Second-year free safety Robinson had been released by the San Francisco 49ers just as it appeared he had moved up on the defensive depth chart.
Like a solid tackle in the open field, BAM!, along came the Eagles with an offer. He took it.
The Eagles website describes the signing and Robinson's potential:
"The 5-foot-9, 193-pound Robinson was recently released by San Francisco. The sixth-round pick played in three games as a rookie last year with the 49ers after being a three-year starter at Michigan State. He's a quick, athletic safety who fares better in coverage than in the box thanks to his size. He ran the second-best 40 time (4.52 seconds) for safeties at the Combine last year."
The Eagles have designated Robinson on the practice squad, a status that reportedly pays $6,000 a week, not bad work if you can get it for a year, equaling about $350,000.
He is the only defensive back on the practice squad comprised of a tackle, a linebacker, a wide receiver and a running back. The Eagles posted:
"The Eagles signed five players to the practice squad Monday, including four who spent the 2013 preseason with the team. Running back Matthew Tucker, tackle Michael Bamiro, linebacker Travis Long and wide receiver Greg Salas all return to the team after impressing throughout the summer.
"The newcomer is safety Trenton Robinson, who spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers after he was selected in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Michigan State.
"At 5-foot-9, 193 pounds, the 23-year-old Robinson can play both safety and cornerback and joins a deep secondary that includes 11 players on the active roster after the addition of Shaun Prater on Sunday. He played in three games as a rookie for the 49ers last season and was released as part of the team's final roster cutdown last weekend.
"A two-time All-Big Ten honoree at Michigan State, Robinson ranks tied for 12th in school history with nine career interceptions in 46 games, including 32 starts at safety.
Robinson has been assigned No. 35 on the practice squad of five players, considered backups in case of injury, although there seems to be a vacancy on the free safety depth chart that he might strive to fill.
The Eagles finished last year at 4-11 and at 2-9 were last in the NFC East Conference.
Fans tweeted that Robinson's height, 5-9, might be a drawback, but some pointed out that good things often come in small packages.
