Chili Cook-off Will Be Hot Competition

Mano a mano.

Nope: mayor vs. mayor!

Crush peppers, mince garlic, saute the beans and light a fire under the meat.

The Mayor's 1st Annual Chili Challenge is on!

And it's an official event to select the People's Choice chili.

Richard Knapik, Mayor of Bay City, Texas, sponsored by Sysco Foods, will be challenging Mayor Robert Katt of Bay City, Michigan, sponsored by Bosco Foods.

The cookin' mayors will be hosted by the Midland StreetMerchants and Paulette Horen at Rathskeller Food and Spirits, 600 E. Midland Street, Bay City.

The aroma of competition chili will fill the air and waft along Midland Street on Sunday, Sept. 18, as the Mayor's 1st Annual Chili Challenge gets under way.

Celebrity cooks include State Senator Jim Barcia and wife, Vicky, hosted by O'Hare's Saloon; Johnny Burke of WHNN Radio, hosted by Hooters; and Terry Watson, Supervisor of Bangor Township, hosted by Midland Street Pub. The cooks will be vying for trophies and prize money, to be donated to their favorite charities.

The nationally known musical group of the sixties, the Vogues, and other entertainment, including dueling pianos and Karaoke, promises a daylong event forthe enjoyment of the whole family.

The $5 entry fee includes a tasting kit and a ballot to vote for your favorite People's Choice chili. Knights Luxury Transport will provide parking shuttle service from Veterans Memorial Park to the event.

At 1:00 p.m., judging and taste testing will begin and conclude at 3:00 p.m. for the Celebrity Cook-off. The Midland Street Merchant Chili Cook-Off will follow this event from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The awards presentation begins at 4 p.m. for the People's Choice and the Overall Award for the Celebrities, followed by the People's Choice and Overall Award for the Midland Street Merchants.

Mayor Robert Katt exclaimed: "What makes these type of cook-offs so much fun is the rivalries that go between the contestants".

Major sponsors of the event include Independent Bank, Muhlenback Distributing featuring Molson, Best Real Estate, Showcase Mitsubishi, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and F.P. Horak.

If you would liketo help sponsor or volunteer for this event, or need additional information, please contact Paulette at mailto:Phoren@msn.com. ###
