Education is the focus of the most recent round of grants from the Dow Corning Foundation.

The trustees of the Dow Corning Foundation (DCF) approved over $525,000 in grants at their September meeting including the following Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan projects:

  • Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) received a $254,000 grant to increase the region's middle school and high school students' interest in and understanding of the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

    The grant takes effect January 1, and will focus on 4,000 students in Arenac, Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties and up to 20 teachers each year from school districts within those counties.

    Over the next two years, the K-12 teachers -- who will be known as Dow Corning Fellows -- will partner with SVSU faculty each year during a two-week workshop and research experience to develop classroom projects geared toward STEM-based studies. The educators will create materials to be used in middle and high school classrooms the following academic year.

  • Junior Achievement of Central Michigan has been granted $90,000 to support programming in Midland, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella and Gratiot Counties.

  • Junior Achievement of Northeast Michigan will receive $102,000 to support programming in Bay Arenac, Tuscola, Saginaw and Huron Counties to underwrite the Titan Challenge for a three year period.

  • The trustees also approved partnerships with Community Foundations in Greensboro, NC; Kendallville, IN, and Elizabethtown, KY, to establish local Donor Advised Funds in the communities surrounding the sites. These new funds will be patterned after the Great Lakes Bay Region Donor Advised Funds (DAF), a subcommittee of the DCF, and will be directed by employee committees at each site.

    "We are very pleased with the success of our partnerships with the Bay Area, Midland Area and Saginaw Area Community Foundations over the past several years and the trustees felt it was time to expand the model in the communities surrounding some of our key U.S. sites," explained Kathryn Curtiss Spence, DCF Director.

    The Dow Corning Foundation established these three Donor Advised Funds in 2010, and has invested $750,000 into the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan via this path since that date, in addition to its other work. The DAF, which is comprised of Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor employees, directs a total of $300,000 in grants annually in the Great Lakes Bay Region through the Bay Area, Midland Area and Saginaw Community Foundations.

    In the Great Lakes Bay Region, the DAF approved nearly $82,000 in local grants during its September meeting.

    The following non-profit organizations benefited from Q3 funding:

    Bangor Township Schools: $8000 to purchase materials and curriculum for an extra-curricular STEM Club;

    Bay County Public Schools Academy: $4500 for curriculum and materials designed to provide hand-on STEM projects for students;

    CAN Council of the Great Lakes Bay Region: $14,764 to provide Safer, Older, Smarter books focusing on personal safety for all 2nd graders in Bay and Saginaw Counties;

    Carrollton Township: $8000 to upgrade and convert baseball/softball diamonds for community use;

    Essexville Garber High School: $2300 for the purchase of renewable energy curriculum materials;

    Mission in the City: $8000 designated for the development of a curriculum driven playground for children ages 2-5;

    MSU Extension-Bay County: $7350 in support of the 4H Maps and Aps program regionally;

    Shelterhouse: $8000 directed toward the establishment of a new retail shop;

    St Mary's of Michigan: $4000 to the Center of Hope for the purchase of food for healthy cooking classes;

    St Paul Lutheran School: $5000 for the purchase of microscopes, lab aids and science kits;

    Saginaw Valley State University: $11,700 to help fund the Great Lakes Bay Youth Leadership Institute.

    The DCF's mission is to improve scientific literacy by increasing access to math, science and technology education at the pre-university level, improve vitality and quality of life in communities where Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor employees work and reside and to increase the utilization of sustainable, innovative technologies to benefit society.
