"We're Going to Save More Lives," says Dr. Gerold Bepler of the Karmanos Institute.

Cancer patients from the mid-Michigan region will have more options and better care under a new partnership between McLaren Health Care and Karmanos Cancer Institute of Detroit, according to the two top physicians involved.

The joint operation will create the state's largest cancer research and treatment program, serving 12,000 of Michigan's 57,500 newly-diagnosed cancer patients, said Dr. Justin F. Klamerus, president and medical director of the McLaren Cancer Institute, Burton.

To increase service to cancer patients, McLaren will renovate a vacant 30,000 square foot building on the West Campus and hire new staff including four medical oncologists as well as backup employees. The new Bay City center is expected to be completed by September 2014.

Services will include chemotherapy in the nearby Jeppesen Radiation Oncology building, consultation and counseling, said Dr. Gerold Bepler, of Detroit, president and CEO of the 70 year-old Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The physicians said "McLaren will make robust investments" in the new joint program, to be operated under the Karamanos banner. "Under the terms of the agreement, McLaren will provide a substantial capital investment over a multi-year period to assist with capital upgrades at Karmanos facilities and to fund clinical trials, basic and translational research programs," stated the cancer institute in a news release, detailing:

"The Karamanos Cancer Institute will become a member of the nonprofic McLaren Health Care system. Both Karmanos Cancer Institute and Karmanos Cancer Center, which provides clinical care to patients, will retain their names and remain as separate legal entities, maintaining their assets and reporting to their existing respective boards of directors."

Dr. Bepler said half of all new cancer drug treatments that gain FDA approval come out of the Karmanos Institute. "This provides more treatment options for cancer patients in this program," he said at a news conference. McLaren's 25 medical and radiology studies will be vastly increased by the 300 to 400 advanced studies available through Karmanos, he added, commenting: "Drugs, screening and prevention education all make a difference in patient outcomes." Some 24 patient stations will be installed in the renovated center here, where Bay City's Habitat for Humanity is presently working to prepare the space and rehabilitate furnishings," said McLaren-Bay City information director Megan Samyn, Vice President of Marketing & Public Relations for McLaren Bay Region.

Dr. Klamerus said the partnership expects that as the health system grows the cancer institute will grow also. Facilities at the Karmanos headquarters in Detroit will be upgraded, he said. The Karamanos institute is affiliated with Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, and the Detroit Medical Center. Other Karamanos centers are in Farmington Hills and Monroe.

"This agreement gives us the opportunity to extend our reach to give more people a better chance at surviving this disease," said Dr. Bepler.

Located in midtown Detroit, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is a 70-year-old 501 c 3 nonprofit organization and one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S.

Caring for more than 6,000 new patients annually on a budget of $260 million, conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, Karmanos is reputed to be one of the nation's best cancer centers. It has more than 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 physicians and researchers on faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine. For more information: www.karmanos.org
