Rotary Club of Bay City

Centennial Year Celebrations
July 2014-June 2015

The greatly anticipated 100th Birthday of Bay City's oldest service club is fast approaching and the 2014-15 Rotary year has been set asside to celebrate the occassion!

The meeting on the 11th featured Centennial committee co-chairs Ron Bloomfield and Rob Clark, who presented a slide show laying out the plans for the entire year. That show is available on the Club's web site.

The theme for the entire year will be "Celebration and Giving Back". The celebration component will include special programs, plaques honoring founding members, picnics, and special programs. The "Giving Back" component will include food drives, coats for kids, fund raisers, and joint projects with Do-All, the Bay County Historical Museum, and the Loins club.

Special activities include the unveiling of the Paul Harris statue in Rotary Park, presentation of special pins to members, and the publication of an update to the "First 100 Years of Rotary" club history book.

The Committee also announced the goal of becoming a 100% Paul Harris Fellow club. We are very close to that now. A modest contribution combined with "points" make it possible for everyone to achieve their fellowship!

See the FULL SLIDE SHOW at this link on the club web site.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Lee reported on the Board meeting held before the retular meeting. Ron Bloomfield, President-elect, and Brenda Scramlin, President nominee, have both registered for the upcoming President Elect Training (PETS). The board earmarked funds for the Centennial year. The Paul Harris Statue committee made a formal request for partial funding from the club and will come back to the board with additional details.

The board approved $1,000 for the Guatemala project and $500 to a district water project request. This comes from budgeted funds. Additional district funds will be solicited from members. $500 was pledged at the meeting. The Guatemala program's current project is a sustainable seed initiative.

During "Happy Bucks", Kathy Czerwinski noted how Bay City was awarded "Port of the Year" yet again by the Tall Ship organization. She named many of the Rotarians who volunteered and helped make the event such as success.

Andreas Teich reported on son Johnathan, who is an intern with NBC TV at the Sochi Olympics. Andreas noted that if the camera is on the anchors at the speed skating venue, and it pulls back just right, you might see the back of Johnathan's head. His mother waits for those moments!

The Centennial Committee has set the goal of EVERY MEMBER achieving Paul Harris Fellow status during the Centennial Year. There are matching points available that allow a member to receive their first Paul Harris level at a fraction of the normal $1,000 contribution.

VOCATIONAL DAYS REMINDER Vocational days are right around the corner on March 11 and March 25. Thanks to electronic communications, there is still "last minute" time for Rotarians to sign up to host students. Lee reminded the club that the meeting on March 25 will be at the Country Club. Lee also noted that the next board meeting will be moved from March 11 to March 18 due to Vocational Days on the 11th.
