Rotary Host Students on Second Vocational Day

On Tuesday the Rotary Club hosted the second of two Vocational Days for 2014. Over 175 students explored careers and educational offerings in the area. Program Chairman Matt Felan introduced the counselors from each school and had the students stand to be recognized. President Lee Newton started the program by telling the students what Rotary is and what it means.

Courier noted that an educated work force is required in today's environment. It provides the fuel for economic development. She noted that only 24.5% of Michigan people 25 and older have a Bachelor Degree. 60% of today's jobs require more than a high school education and by 2020, that will be 70%.
She then talked about the difficulty of preparing for college. Students should be thinking about ACT testing, scholarships, career guidance, the job outlook, and the choice of colleges. Perhaps the most important thing is completing the annual "Free Application for Student Aid" (FAFSA).
The Bay Commitment was designed to help students with these tasks. Courier talked about their programs, their "College Prep Survival Kit", and the staff of college prep service officers. The Commitment reaches out to high schools with both on-site programs and the resources at the Community Foundation offices in the Pere Marquette Depot.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Centennial Committee, along with the GOLF and International Night committees will hold a joint meeting next Tuesday, April 1, prior to the regular meeting at the Doubletree. The three committees will be discussing budget matters for the upcoming 100 year anniversary celebrations and programs.
The Community Grant process is being restarted and the committee will report back soon with procedures.
Andrea Hales is still selling program ads for the concert. Cindy Chadwick, who will be doing the program, has ask that all ads be turned in within the next few days since the concert is just over a week away!
The club will meet off site on April 22. Member Greg Rosecranz has arranged for the Bay City Players to host the club's luncheon and give a tour of the changes at the theater. Rotary helped underwrite this work as part of the last major projects funding.
The Centennial Committee has set the goal of EVERY MEMBER achieving Paul Harris Fellow status during the Centennial Year. There are matching points available that allow a member to receive their first Paul Harris level at a fraction of the normal $1,000 contribution.

April 29, 2014: S.O.S. - Save Our Shoreline Save our Shoreline is a non-profit, grass roots organization of property owners and others committed to the preservation of riparian rights along Michigan's 3288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Ernie Krygier, president of S.O.S., will provide a history.
