Auburn Library Hosts 20 Local Authors Including 9-Year-Old Reese Haller

Author Day Provides Public a Look at Wide Variety of Micro Press Books

MaeJean Mason, 48, has written "Out of the Tempest," the story of her life after receiving an overdose of vitamins as treatment for mushroom poisoning 20 years ago. It is an inspirational story about how Mrs. Mason has rebounded from disability caused bythe mushroom poisoning and the death of her husband. Reese Haller is only 9 but, with help from his father, consultant and author ThomasHaller, is an accomplished author of a book series, "Fred The Mouse: Book One, The Adventures Begin." This is a delightful story of about a field mouse that learns to trust his intuition at the mouse scurry and scamper school. "Your children will be inspired by the story and encouraged by the message," says Reese. Tom Haller, in collaboration with Chick Moorman, writes and publishes children and family teaching books. Ebullient "Zelda FitzGibbons," aka Mary Ann Gibbons, exudes lore of her birthplace, Beaver Island, and life with her parents, the unlikely pairing of a Bohemian Jewess and a Prussian Army officer, and several zany husbands including a millionaire. "Almost everyone has a good story to tell," says Connie Hawkins, local author and promoter of the Mid-MichiganWriters group and Meeting in the Middle, a writer's forum, both of which meet in West Branch. The writers group meets the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at Java Junction in West Branch, said Chris Lucka, poet. The group has published "Silver Reflections," a poetry anthology. Another associated writers group, Meeting in the Middle, meets the middle Wednesday of the month at 6:30 at Java Junction. Coordinator is Debbie Walker.

The writers group will hear from Jay Brandow, Bay City television newsman and author of "The Captain's Chair," on Saturday, Oct. 29 at its Fall Writers Forum in the Northeast Arts Council Building, West Branch. The event, entitled "Gateway to Writing," will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Workshop sessions will include "From Memories to Fiction"and "Finding Poetry" and panel discussions and open mike. "The Erma Bombeck of Kawkawlin," as Connie Hawkins is sometimes called, "doesn't try to be funny -- she just is. Her stories on traveling with young children will not only make you laugh, they will inspire you!"
