International Night Fun For ALL!

Some 300 Rotarians and guests gathered at Bay City's Doubletree Hotel and Conference center for the annual International Night fund rasier. This years theme of "Dunyada Arkadaslik" which is Turkish for World Friendship, honored our "twin club" in Zekeriyakoy, Turkey. The menu featured a number of Turkish dishes. Entertainment included a genuine Turkish Belly Dancer who has performed all over the world. The night included a silent and a live aution of a wide variety of items.
Candace Bales, executive director of the Downtown Management Board, updated the assemblage on progress made in repairing the vandalized Rotary historic kiosk in a micropark at Center and Saginaw streets. The damage has been repaired and the kiosk reopened, she said. Rewards have been contributed by the Rotary Club, the Bay City Times, the DDA, and the Oscoda Rotary Club, she said.

While excavating for the next kiosk near the waterfront on Third Street Ms. Bales said old trolley tracks were found. The third kiosk will be at the Pere Marquette Union Station Depot on Boutell Place, projected new home of the Bay Area Community Foundation.

Past district governor Jerome Yantz noted that International Night benefits the Rotary Charitable Foundation that funds projects such as the microparks.

Wilde reports on Pure Waterprogram

Steve Wilde of the Midland Rotary Club delivered an updated report on "Pure Water for the World", a non-profit organization formed by the Brattleboro, Vermont Rotary Club in 2003. In partnership with over 300 other Rotary Clubs, and with additional funding from Rotary International, this project has educated over 21,000 people and provided concert "bio sand"filters to thousands of families.

The lack of clean drinking water is one of the most significant health threats in the world. Some 1.1 billion poeple lack cclean drinking water and between 1.7 and 2.2 million people each year die of waterborne diseases.

The Pure Water program educates people in the construction, use and maintenance of simple, "bio sand" water filtration systems. Essentially the filter is a 300 pound concrete container in which layers of sand and gravel filterwater fed from a "diffuser" container on the top. A layer of microbes form in the top sand layers and digest contamination in the water as it seeps through the unit. The result is clean water reaching the bottom of the container where it is siphoned off through a pipe.

The average cost of a filter unit is about $300. Manufacturing facilities are established in local communities where the people themselves build the units. The Rotary "Pure Water" project educates the poeple and provides the startup and continuing funding to maintain the systems.

The latest developments are research into a plastic unit. It is anticipated that the cost would be considerably lower and the reduced weight would make the unit practical for more locations.

Several programs are available to Rotary Clubs. An "Adopt-A-Village" program where $10,000 can provide 133 filters for a villageor an area is described as a potential district project where a group of clubs can join forces.
