Pinny's Marut Too Much For Garber In District Play

Garber's Stacy Desanto (21) scores on a rebound over Pinny's and Candice Marut (23)
Pinconning's Candice Marut wears Michael Jordan's jersey number twenty-three for the Spartan Girls' basketball team. Marut put on a Jordan-like performance Tuesday night during the Class B District Tournament at Nouvel to lead her team to a 50-43 win over a tenacious and scrappy Garber quintet.
Marut scored 19 first-half points, matching the first half team total for the Lady Dukes, as the Spartans (18-3) jumped to a 25-19 lead.
The tenacious Garber girls rallied time and time again inthe second half but came up short as the final buzzer sounded. Garber came out of the locker room fired up after intermission and made a spurt to pull within a single point early in the third period but couldn't ever seem to overtake the Spartans.
Garber rallied again late to close with-in four points (44-40) but rebound baskets by Pinny's Molly Pickvet and a jumper and free throw by Marut sealed the win for the Spartans.
Marut ended the night with 32 to lead all scores while Pickvet chipped in with 8.
Andrea Mayotte tallied 12 points to lead the Garber attack. Tiffany Willette and Hilary Dammer each had 8 points, Sandrika Ware had 7 and Stacy DeSanto 6 in a balanced effort for Garber who ended the season with a 8-13 record.
