The Redskins have waived safety Bacarri Rambo, a league source confirmed Tuesday, perhaps opening the door for Trenton Robinson to gain more playing time.

Robinson, who took over for Rambo in the second half of the Redskin win over Jacksonville last week, made six tackles and grabbed his first NFL interception in the fourth quarter, returning it 13 yards.

"Trenton did a nice job," said Coach Jay Gruden, noting however that Brandon Merriweather is returning and will likely be the starter.

Rambo, the teams sixth round draft pick in 2013, struggled in Washington's first two games, noted a Redskin blogger:

"Against the Texans, he failed to tackle DeAndre Hopkins and the result was a 76-yard touchdown. Then last Sunday against the Jaguars, Rambo took a poor angle on pass to Marcedes Lewis, who made the catch and raced 63 yards for a score. Rambo was promptly replaced by safety Trenton Robinson following the miscue.

"Rambo's struggles are not isolated to this season, though. As a rookie, he won the starting free safety job but was benched after only two games. The coaching staff, however, hoped the former Georgia standout had turned the corner after a decent preseason. But it was apparent after the mistake on the Lewis touchdown that he had not."

Cutting Rambo created a spot on the roster for veteran safety Brandon Meriweather, who is returning following a two-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit. Meriweather is expected to return to the starting lineup Sunday in Philadelphia.

The Redskins' depth chart at safety currently includes Ryan Clark, Meriweather, Robinson, Akeem Davis and Duke Ihenacho.

Robinson signed with Washington five games into the 2013 season and contributed almost exclusively on special teams, wrote Mike Jones for the Washington Post. Robinson also was receiving snaps at free safety with the third unit behind Ryan Clark and Rambo.

Former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins is moving into the starter's position because of an injury to Robert Griffin III.
