Andrew Berkobien -- My First Buck!!!

The author with her 2002 Split Toe

Anyone driving Northbound, I-75 on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 knew that something was happening. Every other vehicle had this distinctive Bright Orange glow to it. By Thursday afternoon you knew that Michigan's 2002 Firearm Season was getting closer with each mile as the Orange Glow was moving North into the woods.
I, myself, was unable to concentrate by Tuesday afternoon, let alone Thursday morning. I came down with a common infection for this time of year called "Buck Fever!"
The weather opening morning was close to perfect! The only thing that would have made it better was if there had been a couple of inches of snow to make the treck out to your favorite hunting spot a little quieter.
From what I hear and what I witnessed this yearsFirearm Season got underway with a BIG BLAST!!!
For Andrew Berkobien, 15, of Swan Valley, it was the opening day that he will never forget! Andrew had spent many weekends this year out in his bow blind without success. But, by 7:45 am, Friday, November 15th, opening day, he had bagged his first buck!

This nice 8" spike was taken in Ogemaw County just after day break. Hunting with his father and grandfather, this was an experience that Andrew will never forget!

As for the other hunters from the area that I had the pleasure of swapping "Buck Tales" with, we all pretty much agreed that this was the best Firearm opener in years, if not decades!

The numbers coming out of Bay, Arenac, Ogemaw, Iosco and Saginaw Counties are quite impressive!!! From 10 points out of Bay County, 8 points coming out of Iosco and a 12 point coming out of Saginaw County, the deer are there for the taking. Nothing like last year where you were lucky if you saw one doe let alone bag a buck!

I can say for myself that this year was the most active oepning weekend I have ever experienced, and I've been hunting since the early 80's with my dad. Now, I hunt with my husband and we were both fortunate enough to "Bag a Buck" and brought our cooler home full! The woods are calling us again for this weekend to see if we can't bag one of the two "wall hangers" we saw in the woods last weekend.

So, if you were one of the unfortunate, and didn't Bag Your Buck, HAVE NO FEAR! You have until the 30th to get that buck, and there will hopefully be more pictures in the next week of bigger and better "racks". If you were fortunate enough to "Bag That Buck" email me with a picture and tell me where you got it. Don't worry, I'm not asking for your "secret spot" I just want to know the County.

Good Luck and Safe Hunting!
