The United States Homeland Security agency has issued the following alert:

"High income citizens have been receiving calls from 213.289.0373 (LA area code). Caller id's himself as Kevin Peterson and indicates that he is an IRS agent.

"Caller provides potential victim w/an "ID Code" he reports is issued by the IRS. Caller (foreign accent, possibly India or mid-eastern) tells potential victim that they owe back taxes (other schemes as well, i.e., law suit against them) and that he has a warrant for their arrest.

"He explains that the potential victim can forego the arrest by making a payment on their back taxes and directs the potential victim to immediately get a money order for a designated amount @ a local drug store, i.e., Rite Aid or another business that issues money orders.

"The caller tells the potential victim to call 213.289.0373 back when the money order is secured and he (the caller) will provide instructions as to where to send the payment.

"Caller also tells the potential victim not to inform the money order vendor as to what the money order is for.

"Note: you can GOOGLE this TX# 213.289.0373 and view several "posts" re: this scam. Caller has access to victim's mobile and land line TX numbers.

Additonal: Victim who reported this indicates that he hung up on the caller. Immediately after hanging up he received a call via his mobile phone. The number shown on his mobile was 911. The victim answered the call and it was the "scam" caller (Kevin Peterson) who threatened retribution."

The alert concludes: "Senior citizens are extremely vulnerable to this type of scam!"
