There was a big turnout of 11 girls and 34 boys at the annual Bay City Elks' Hoop Shoot on December 3, 2005. The event was held Saturday morning at the Cramer Jr. High School gym in Essexville. Trophies were awarded to all the winners. There was a nice crowd of onlookers in attendance during the three and a half hour tournament.

Zack Gregory, the grandson of a Bay City Elks No. 88 Past Exalted Ruler, won the 8-9 age division in the Elks Hoop Shoot Tournament and will advance to the Districts in Tawas next month.

Zack's grandfather, Bill Gregory, who now is retired in Greenbush, near Oscoda, was an outstanding baseball head coach at Bay City Central and SVSU. Zack's grandmother was the former Alice McCormick and a long-time elementary teacher in Bay City.

The girl winner in 8-9 years-old was Kate Grant. In 10-11 age bracket winners were: Kyle Sporman and Emma McBride. In 12-13 age bracket were: Tyler Schlink (a repeat from last year) and Allison Gust.

The ultimate winners names are inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. This is a nation-wide program with most of the 71 Michigan Elks lodges in the tournament having their state champions teaming up with lodges from the other 49 states.

In Bay City, the Elks Hoop Shoot tournament has been led for several years by John Sauve, an insurance executive, with the help of two of his children, Laura and Bradley Sauve. Elks has a double meaning. It stands for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, but most members will tell you that it stands for the Best People on Earth.

The Bay City Elks meet twice a month on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. at their Bay City headquarters on the corner of Fifth and Washington, and the entrance door is almost directly across from the Bay City Times. They are open for members lunch Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and for dinner on Thursday and Friday.

The banquet room is available for members and guests for parties and weddings, especially on Saturday nights.
