Chances are most of us are going to experience some form of injury or surgery that will be debilitating even for a short period of time. Simple tasks of getting in and out of a bath tub, using the toilet or just getting around the house and community can become daunting. So what do you do? This is where the Disability Services Resource Center, better known as DSRC, comes in. They have medical equipment to lend out at no costs to you that will make the recuperation much more manageable.

Recently my wife had back surgery. While the doctor wanted her to be up and moving around as much as possible, she was not allowed to sit for more than 30 minutes. Bending was also restricted. Upon leaving the hospital, it became quite apparent that day to day living was going to be rather difficult. One call to DSRC and life became much more manageable.

The good folks at DSRC were ready with hospital beds, wheelchairs, bathroom helpers and much more. I can't begin to tell you how much this helped in the day to day efforts and recovery. It also made it much easier on the rest of us so we could be the supporting family she needed.

DSRC doesn't stop there. They provide athletic activities for "kids" who wouldn't otherwise be able to experience the fun and joy of the activity. Through ACES, All Children Experience Sports, they offer a summer softball league, bowling and horseback riding to name a few of their other community support activities.

And let's not forget what DSRC is best known for, their Ramp Building. This community supported program provides much needed wheelchair ramps built by volunteers allowing our family, friends and neighbors the ability to leave their homes and become active members of our community.

These projects don't come cheap and are supported by the kind donations of members of our community and through their fundraising efforts throughout the year. March 20, DSRC is holding one of their biggest fundraisers, the Silent Auction at the Double Tree. Dinner, entertainment and great items are available for auction at this fun event. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 a couple and can be purchased at DSRC located at 1820 North Trumbull, Bay City or you can phone them at 895-5444.

Other FUNraising events to watch for is the always yummy Soup Supper held in October, a golf outing on July 21 at the Bay Count Golf Course and of course, donations are always welcome.

DSRC is also gearing up for their Ramp Blitz on Saturday, June 13. Volunteers are still needed to build ramps and you can even sponsor a ramp for someone in need. This is a great group activity which is fun to do and rewarding as well.

For more information on all their activities, you can call them or check out their web site at www.dsrcbc.org or like them on facebook.com/DSRCBC
