Garber's return to the playoffs was bittersweet.

The Dukes traveled to Goodrich to play on the Martians' new AstroTurf field. The Dukes came out at the start of the contest with their best emotion and fire of the season.

After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, signs were evident of an upset victory. While arguably each of the Dukes played one of their finest games of their season, it was the turnovers that let the Martians in the game.

Ultimately Goodrich was able to take advantage of their good field position on turnovers and punch in two touchdowns en route to a 30-20 win.

Goodrich looked to take advantage of Garber's emotions by running an opening kickoff reverse. But the Dukes stuffed the trickery on the Martian's 16 yard line. Two plays later, free safety CJ Glaza stepped in front of a down the middle pass, intercepting the attempt and slashing his way to the Goodrich four. While Goodrich defense stiffened, Garber went for it on fourth down using a power sweep which Noah Bargouthy took advantage of good blocking for a 2 yard touchdown run. Drew Piotrowski's kick made it 7-0.

Goodrich showed signs of answering the touchdown on their first play racing down the sidelines to midfield. But the Martians gave the ball back to Garber when CJ Glaza jumped on the fumble and Garber was in business on the Goodrich 43. Playing to the hot hand, freshman QB Logan Martin hit Glaza on a short post and the speedy sophomore raced down field to the Martian four yard line. Moments later it was Logan hooking up with sophomore Kody Wenglikowski for an eight yard touchdown pass and Garber held a 14-0 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter.

After forcing a 3 and out, Garber looked to be driving for a third touchdown. After a counter play to Bargouthy moved the ball to midfield, a third down pass was intercepted and Goodrich had their first spark of the night. Using their speed, Goodrich drove the ball down field. Then QB Sam Bolongaita hit Joey Sharrow on a 24 yard pass down the middle of the field for Goodrich's first score.

The fired up Martians struck again on their next possession. Mixing up short passes with outside runs they drove down to the Duke 8 yard line with under a minute to play in the half. Then Bolongaita faked a roll out pass right and tucked it in for an 8 yard touchdown run knotting the score at 14 all going into the half.

Defense dominated much of the second half. Neither team was able to move the ball much then the turnover avalanche started. First Garber mishandled the punt giving Goodrich the ball on the Garber 12 yard line. The Duke defense came up big holding Goodrich to a field goal attempt and when the kick hit the upright, Garber had seemingly dodged a bullet.

Taking the ball on the twenty, Garber fumbled the snap from center on the first play giving Goodrich the ball on Garber's 17. The Duke defense comes up huge again and this time, the Martians are able to connect on a 30 yard field goal giving Goodrich their first lead, 17-14.

The fumbles continue on their next possession. First a bad hand off exchange stalls the drive forcing a punt. When a low snap is mishandled, Goodrich is able to stop the punt and again, have great field position on the Garber 21 yard line. But the Duke defense was a wall forcing a 42 yard field goal attempt which was short and wide keeping the score at 17-14.

On Garber's next possession, the Dukes turned to some trickery of their own to get their offense rolling. With junior QB Simeon Berry having moved to halfback, they tried a halfback pass to a streaking Dakota Biddle down the right sideline. But the pass was intercepted at the Goodrich 41 and again Goodrich had the ball back on turnovers.

Goodrich looked to settle the game down and control the action with their ground attack. They used a mixture of rushers successfully and when Bolongaita dove over from the one yard line, Goodrich had built a 10 point lead with 5:38 left to play.

With time escaping Garber, they went to the air for quick yardage. After two dropped passes and an overthrow left them with fourth down, Logan threw a strike for an apparent first down. But a holding penalty erased that play forcing Garber to punt. With time running out, the Dukes ran a fake punt but Tyler Schroeder's run came up just a couple yards short giving Goodrich yet more good field position on Garber's 31.

The Garber defense was tough again but time was against them. Tanner Weichmann all but sealed the win with an 11 yard run making it 30-14.

But Garber was not done yet. On their next possession, Berry took the hand off to the right, found a seam and bolted 64 yards untouched for a touchdown. Now down by 10, Garber faked an extra point with Noah Bargouthy racing left but stopped inches short of the goal line leaving the score at 30-20 with 1:36 left to play.

When the onside kick was recovered by Goodrich, Garber's season and a valiant effort was over. For the seniors, collectively and individually they played some of their finest football this night. And for the underclassmen, they showed they are ready to keep Garber in the playoffs for years to come.
