Mark your calendar for the Great Lakes Bay Region Heart Walk, the American Heart Association's premier community fundraising event. The event will be held in Midland on Saturday, May 12 at the Dow. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The 2 mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m.

Walkers are encouraged to organize teams at the companies where they work or with family and friends. Walkers may also ask others to support their walk effort by sponsoring them with a life-saving donation to the American Heart Association. The Heart Walk is designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living, and creates an environment that's fun and rewarding for the entire family.

HEART FACTS:
  • Someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 38 seconds.
  • Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.
  • And congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.

"When you join Heart Walk, you join more than a million people in 300+ cities across America in taking a stand against heart disease and helping save lives," said Jennifer Gracey, corporate event director of the American Heart Association. "Walk with friends, family, coworkers and help make our community a healthier place to live, work and play. Your heart will thank you for it."

Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded major advances, such as the heart-lung machine, CPR/ AED, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery and surgical techniques to repair heart defects and save lives.
