Bryce Presents "LinkedIn for Business Professionals" to Rotary

June 23, 2015
By: Stephen Kent

Beth Bryce
Beth Bryce, director of Career Services at Northwood University, spoke to Rotary on the topic of LinkedIn for Business Professionals.

LinkedIn is a social media service for professionals. It allows business people to connect with each other and with businesses to promote their skills an services as well as to find people who have the skills to fulfill a job or task.

Bryce uses LinkedIn for her own purposes, but also teaches how to use the service and consults with people who want to improve their uses. LinkedIn boasts 347 million users and 3 million businesses. One in every three professionals use the service and one in 20 recruiters make it their number 1 search tool.

The user's profile is one of the most important things to address. Bryce talked about having a headline and a photo. You should pay attention to your summary, experience and education.

Another points were "your Peeps", or the people you connect with. Who is checking you out and how do you connect with those you want to talk to.

Bryce talked about "raving fans", the information you post and how often you do this. She touched on groups and companies and methods for driving traffic with recognition and interest. Her talk was most useful to people already using LinkedIn , but it also opened the eyes of others who could take advantage of the service, both those actively working and the retired crowd.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Ron opened the meeting with a Turkish greeting. Rotary was first discussed for Turkey in 1929. The first club was eventually founded in 1955 in Ankara. The Istanbul club followed in 1956. Additional information may be found at The Rotary Global History fellowship and at Rotary 1st 100.

The club expresses its sympathy and prayers at the passing of Marian Lewless, wife of Rotarian Jerry and mother of Rotarian Bret.

Tim Holsworth recapped the Golf Outing which took place two weeks ago. He once again read the names of all of the sponsors. Rotary expresses its thanks to all of these fine people, companies and organizations as well as to the committee and helpers. Tim also noted that when Cindy Chadwick drew husband Bob's name for the 60" TV, they did something "completely ridiculous" and auctioned it off giving $550 to Rotary. When all the money is in, the club should have raised something north of $10,000. All proceeds will be going to Bay City Schools for technology. Pictures are on the club web site at rotarybaycity.org/rot-Golf2015.cfm

Matt Reid, an English teacher at Central High, thanked the club for the recent grant and told what the money was used for. Matt teaches a Journalism class. With school budgets as they are, printing a school newspaper is largely out of the question, so the class has turned to an on-line newspaper on the school web site. The Rotary grant allowed him to purchase two internet based Chrombook computers plus new new textbooks to replace the old (1972) texts. Combining the Rotary grant with other sources he purchaed 5 computers, 35 textbooks, and enough reporter pads to last several years. His noted that when he took on the class three years ago he had 8 kids. Today he has 75!

Connie Schweitzer presented Paul Harris Fellowships to Rick Finn, Laura Taylor, and Bill Bateman. She also presented a PH "Plus 1" to Don Carlyon. The club expresses thanks and congratulations to these four Rotarians.

Anyone wanting to make Rotary Foundation Donations in this year should do that quickly. The Rotary year ends this month and it takes a little time to process donations.
