Want To Quit Smoking? Bay Med Offers Free Classes to Kick the Habit

The Freedom From Smoking classes will meet weekly Feb. 6 through Mar. 20 from 3:30-5 p.m.
 

Smoking Cessation Classes

Bay Regional Medical Center is offering a free orientation class on Feb. 6 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for their smoking cessation program. Any person who is interested in quitting smoking may attend the orientation session to learn about the Freedom From Smoking classes. The orientation will be held at the Center for Rehabilitation, on Bay Regional Medical Center - West Campus, 3190 East Midland Road.

Professionally trained facilitators will use the Freedom From Smoking program, developed by the American Lung Association, to help smokers develop an individual plan for quitting. During the eight-sessions, the instructors will teach a step-by-step method for changing behavior and quitting smoking. The ex-smokers will identify the pitfalls of relapse and carefully plan to prevent it. The clinic includes the latest skills for good stress management, weight control, assertive communication and exercise – skills to help the participant succeed.


The Freedom From Smoking classes will meet weekly Feb. 6 through Mar. 20 from 3:30-5 p.m. Cost is $50 per person. Please call 667-6641.

Pregnancy and Other Support Groups

Bay Regional Medical Center offers a variety of support groups:

· Precious Reflections, a pregnancy and infant loss support group will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 7-9 p.m., at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln. This support group is offered free of charge. For more information, call 894-3015.

· **New Meeting Day ** The Bay Area Cancer Support Group, will meet on the first Thursday each month – Feb. 2, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in Conference Rooms A & B at the Center for Rehabilitation, BRMC West Campus, 3190 E. Midland Road. For more information please call 894-3180 or 633-8451.

· Caring for Others -- For individuals who have the responsibility of taking care of others. Caring for Others will meet from 7-8 p.m. Feb. 8 and 22 at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road. Please contact Karen Pabalis, at 667-6636.

· The Fibromyalgia Support Group, sponsored by Bay Regional Medical Center, will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road. For more information, please call 667-6600.

· ** New Meeting Day ** The Bay Area Laryngectomy Health & Help Support Group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 3-4 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road. Please call 667-6600.

· The Depression After Delivery Support Group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 11–12:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Bay Regional Medical Center West Campus, Women’s Health Pavilion, Childbirth Education Classroom,3175 W. Professional Drive. For more information, call 895-2240 or 1-800-327-4693 and ask to speak to an Infant Mental Health Specialist.

· The Type 2 Diabetes Support Group will meet on Wednesday, February 15 from 6:30–8 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln. For more information, please call (989) 894-8628.

· Bay Area Stroke Support Group –The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road. For information, please call Cynthia Olenick at 667-6736.

· The Amputee Support Group will meet on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, from 3-4 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road. For more information, please call Cynthia Olenick at667-6736.

· The Mini-Gastric Bypass Support Group will meet on Monday, February 6, 2006 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City. For information, please call Kim Hazen at (989) 450-8081 or email khazen@clos.net.

Diabetes Self-Care Education

A Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is offered through Bay Regional Medical Center. Sessions with a diabetes education nurse and registered dietitian are offered weekly. Topics include diabetes diagnosis and progression, meal planning and carbohydrate counting, knowing your numbers, preventing complications, stress management and goal setting. Classes are held at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City. For more information, please call 894-8628.

Prenatal Classes

Bay Regional Medical Center offers a variety of prenatal programs for expectant parents. Classes include:

· Childbirth Series

· Labor and Delivery Refresher

· Breastfeeding Class

· Baby Class for BIG Kids (sibling preparation class)

· Teen Pregnancy and Childbirth Series

· Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Class

· Boot Camp for New Dads

· Nan’s PlayPals

“Dealing with Shoulder Pain” Program

Bay Regional Medical Center’s Center for Rehabilitation will offer the program, “Dealing with Shoulder Pain” on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln. Laryngectomy Health & Help Support Group

Beginning in February, the Bay Area Laryngectomy Health & Help Support Group (a service provided by Bay Regional Medical Center) will meet on the second Thursday of each month from 3–4 p.m. in Conference Rooms A & B at the Center for Rehabilitation, BRMC West Campus, 3190 E. Midland Road.

Arenac County Childbirth Cram Session

Bay Regional Medical Center has scheduled an Arenac County Childbirth Cram Session on Friday, February 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Central Michigan District Health Department, 3727 Deep River Road in Standish.

The fee for this class is $50/couple. There is no charge for those participating with Maternal Support Services.

Teen Pregnancy/Childbirth Class Offered The next Teen Pregnancy/Childbirth Class sponsored by Bay Regional Medical Center is scheduled for February 6 – February 22, 2006 -- Mondays and Wednesday evenings from 6 – 8 p.m. The class, designed exclusively for teens, will offer an environment less threatening and intimidating than similar adult classes. Learning needs will be tailored to the specific needs of teens with emphasis on the importance of regular prenatal care, proper nutrition and healthy habits, breastfeeding, baby care and safety issues, contraception and prevention of STD’s, and emotional support for teens. Bay Regional Medical Center Offers “Nan’s Playpals”Bay Regional Medical Center’s Childbirth Education program offers “Nan’s Playpals,” the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon in the Childbirth Education Classroom, Women’s Health Pavilion, 3175 W. Professional Drive, Bay City. In each class, caregiver and child participate together in musical activities that enhance cognitive, social, motor and language development. Activities include circle time with puppets, rhythmic instruments, sign language, stories and dance. Nan Prevost,RN, instructs each class, which is designed for infants to age 5. Health Education Class

The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic is offering a free health education class to the community about “Arthritis”. The class will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Health Education Center, located adjacent to the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic, 1480 W. Center Road, Essexville.

“Arthritis” will be presented by Brenda Clifford, Occupational Therapist and Jodi White, Physical Therapist. This program will help participants learn about the use of adaptive equipment for arthritic conditions, protection of joints, and light exercise programs.There is no charge to attend. The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic, which provides free medical care, is a service of the community and Bay Medical Foundation. For more information concerning the Clinic, please call (989) 895-4830.

Health Education Class

The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic is offering a free health education class to the community about Back Pain. The class will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Health Education Center, located adjacent to the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic, 1480 W. Center Road, Essexville.

“Back Pain” will be presentedby Margaret Campbell, Physical Therapist. Participants will learn about the risk factors associated with back pain, back anatomy and safe lifting techniques. Suggestions will be given on how to perform common daily activities in a “back smart” way.

There is no charge to attend. All classes are open to the community. Please call Central Scheduling at 667-6303 to register.###
