The Bay Music Foundation held it's annual scholarship competition this past weekend at St. Bonaface Catholic Church in Bay City. Some 17 young musicians performed before judges this year.

For almost 50 years, the foundation been providing summer study scholarships to young musicians and performers from the Bay area. The foundation was the first of its type in the area.

The annual scholarship competition is held each year in January. In what seems to have become a tradition, it always snows, and snows heavily the about the time of the competition. 2006 was no exception. After weeks of above average temperatures, rain, and clear roads, the area saw 6 to 8 inches of snow Friday night. Even so, everyone made it, including judges who came from out of town.

On Sunday after the competition, the winners returned to perform in a Winners Showcase recital. Until this year, the winners from the previous year performed in a "thank you" recital and reported on how they had used their scholarships. With seniors heading off to college, and with other activities, this was always difficult. Bringing back the winners from the day before made much more sense.

Competition is open to all Bay Area Intermediate and High School students. Judging is provided by qualified professional musicians and teachers.

Students in grades 7-8 are classified as "intermediate", grades 9-12 are classified as "senior". Competitors who have previously won their competition at the senior level may compete at the Advanced level.

Competitions are offered for
  • Piano
  • Instrumental
  • Voice
  • Music Theater

The foundation is an entirely voluntary organization. All scholarship funds are provided by contributions. The Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible.
