LEAVE NO TRACE: Saginaw Bay Ice Users Urged to Remove Trash

By: Dave Rogers

Fishing on Saginaw Bay and in the river has been limited by lack of ice cover, but some anglers were reported near shore on the ice and in shallow waters off-shore from the Pine River.

However, local officials have issued a notice to ice users to clean up their sites after they leave.

The Saginaw Bay Coastal Communities work hard to improve the Saginaw Bay, so this year officials are reaching out to ice fishermen, snow machine and ice trail users, anyone that enjoys the Saginaw Bay in the Wintertime to remind them to enjoy the ice but "Leave No Trace."

Laura Ogar, Bay County Environmental Affairs and Community Development Director, says: "Please bag up and back-haul all of your trash, bait cartons, beverage containers, and white grocery bags. In order to keep the Saginaw Bay clean, we ask that you take it back with you instead. Once the ice goes out, the trash left from winter use ends up on the beach."

This year you too can be a part of making the bay better. Remember to stay safe out there and "Leave No Trace."

Everybody can do their part to make the bay better.
