Serious stuff this Hunchback of Notre Dame.

But with an adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel by Craig W. Stump and played out on the stage of the Little Theatre at All Saints Central High School by 20 students, there is humor to be found in this production on stage 7 p.m. March 11 and 12, and 3 p.m. March 13. Tickets are $7 at the door.

The play centers around Quasimodo, a hunchback who has spent most of his life in the Cathedral of Notre Dame, until two crazy nuns convince him to attend the Festival of the Fools where he is crowned King of Fools for being the ugliest person there. He also meets the beautiful LaEsmeralda, the gypsy queen, played by junior Lauren Reyes, and must save her from the evil clutches of Archdeacon Froilo.

"The play is loosely based on the original play," said senior Nathan Emmrich. "It's family friendly."

There are lessons to be learned here.

Lessons like looking beyond the outer shell to the person inside.

"He has a certain idea about himself that he is ugly because that is what he's been told," said Emmrich. "He is a good person. People see him in different ways. I see him as a person who is misdirected by the person who raised him. He thinks no one likes him when he is actually liked by a lot of people."

The school is located at 217 S. Monroe. For more information call 989-892-2533.
