Call it a fluke or pure dumb luck.

Whatever it's called, no one was more surprised than Dena Lewandowski when she and her partner, Kevin Kumaus won last year's Bay Area Housing Indoor Triathlon. "Neither one of us had bowled, shot darts or played pool in years," she said. "We were just there to play and have fun. We went up against people who had their own bowling balls, pool cues, we ended up winning. It was just amazing. It just goes to show you, you don't have to have a ton of experience."

Teaming up with Christopher Charlebois for the third annual event, Lewandowski is ready to not only defend her title but have a little fun as well at the May 14 event at Bay Lanes, 4243 N. Euclid Ave.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with games beginning at 5:20 p.m. Cost per two-person team is $60 before May 7, and $70 after that, and includes a taco bar. To register, call 989-893-9292 or online at http://www.communityhomesolutions.us/home.html. Each team will throw one ball on 10 lanes in a row, followed by throwing 10 darts and ending with 10 pool shots twice. Scores are based on pins knocked down, where the dart hits and the number on the pool ball.

From there eight teams advance to the finals and repeat the sequence. Top scorers win $300, second place is $200 and third place winner receive $100. While Erin Riley, president and CEO of Bay Area Housing DBA as Community Home Solutions, wouldn't mind raising $5000 during the night, her main goal is getting more teams to compete.

"We had 21 teams in the past," she said. "If we get 30 we would be excited." In addition to registration fees, the evening also includes a silent auction with items such as a Tim Horton gift card, a gift basket from Valvoline, a cup, bandana and key chain from Great Lakes Harley Davidson, 18 holes with a cart at Bay Valley Golf course and four passes for the riverboat in Frankenmuth and lunch at the Bavarian Inn.

Money raised from the event is used for programs in counseling and education for home buyers and homeowners - something the agency is very good at. Serving Bay, Midland and Arenac counties, this year the agency has moved into Saginaw County, and were named Housing Counseling Agency of the Year, with Jessica Rivard being named Counselor of the Year by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

The move into Saginaw County has given the agency a new name - Bay Area Housing Doing Business as Community Home Solutions.
