Rotary Attempts Guatemala Skype Conference

Facing an almost perfect storm of downtown road resurfacing, a parking garage closed for repair work, and a full house of other meetings, Rotary met in the Doubletree Restaurant. Despite the less that perfect venue, and thanks to an abbreviated program, the meeting went well and even adjourned early.

With great intentions, Rotary had planned to hold a Skype teleconference with Osman Adriel in Guatemala, where the club has, for many years, participated in a number of projects. Although President Brenda had successfully Skyped with Osman from her own office and had a session scheduled, it was not possible to make a connection from the Doubletree. Later investigation indicates that Skype requires a great connection and good bandwidth. With a full house, the Doubletree's connections were most likely overwhelmed.

In lieu of the Skype session, Brenda gave an update on the Guatemala project then turned the podium over to Chuck Cusick, who has been instrumental in this work, to add additional details.

Brenda will hold a Skype session at her office in the near future to allow interested club members to join in the discussion with Osman.

Tim Holsworth spoke about the Club Golf Outing, scheduled for THIS WEEK, June 16, 2016 at Maple Leaf Golf Course. Tim reported that the open slots are almost filled already! He does, however, have plenty of openings for sponsors are all levels. He also still needs helpers; perhaps now more than ever. Registration is at 7:30am with a shotgun start at 9:00am. Cost is $75 per person with net proceeds going to technology upgrades for Bay City Public Schools. Tim read the names of sponsors and announced that raffle tickets are being sold for the 49 inch, LG smart TV.

Chris Girard reported on the planning for the Zombie Run. The date has been set for October 8 and the location will be the Sugar Trails on the Middle Grounds. It promises to be a great event. Volunteers will be needed so sign up if you are available.

Vocation Day 2016 has been scheduled for November 1. Seven area schools will participate. Some new hosts have been identified. If you would like to take a student, please see Matt.

The first half of the Rotary year is rapidly coming to a close. Dues invoices for the July to December term have been mailed out. Please do your best to get your payment in promptly. You will note a slight change to the dues invoice format. We are trying to better show the breakdown and distribution of the dues. Comments are welcome.
