Go Solar . . . Save Money.

SOLARIZE MICHIGAN! New Non-Profit Aims to Help Homeowners Save $$$

A new non-profit organization aims to help homeowners save money on energy by using solar.

You can, too, and you can find out about this program Friday in Midland.

Phil and Jessica Rausch of Midland will showcase their solar project for media Friday, July 15 between 12:30 and 2 p.m. at 4518 James Drive, Midland. Joining them will be Stephen Wooden, project manager for Solarize Michigan and Mike Brown, Midland Solar Applications.

The Rauschs are eliminating their estimated $2,200 annual energy costs without spending any money upfront, thanks to a newly-installed rooftop solar array arranged by Solarize Michigan with funding through Michigan Saves, a statewide nonprofit focused on helping homeowners and businesses reduce energy costs.

"This project demonstrates that homeowners who want to make their money work for them can "go solar" on any budget," said Wooden. "Our goal is to help homeowners who want to produce their own energy to offset their electric bill, or eliminate it altogether."

The Rausch installation is the first Solarize Michigan project financed through Michigan Saves. The Rauschs' monthly loan payment is roughly equal to what they paid in energy costs. With an estimated payback period of 10 years, the same timeframe as the life of the loan, the Rauschs will be cash flow positive from day one. They will also be protected from future electricity rate hikes.

"Electric prices have risen 30 percent in the last 10 years," said Mary Templeton, executive director of Michigan Saves. "Homeowners can't change the rates they are paying but they can take steps as the Rauschs have taken to make sure their money works for them. Our job is to make it easy and affordable."

Along with Midland Solar Applications, they are Michigan Solar Solutions and The Green Panel.

Solarize Michigan is modeled on successful programs across the country that have allowed homeowners and small business owners to generate a portion of their own power with rooftop solar systems. Savings are achieved by partnering with solar installers and manufacturers, and by joining together large pools of interested homeowners and small businesses, negotiating discounts and passing the savings on to customers.
