Combining his love of theater and music, Ryan Sequin debuts staged readings of his original musical, "Unraveling Magicians," in two free performances at Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Ave.

The work, based on the medieval Welsh folktale of the same name, is on stage at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday. Seating is first come, first served.

Although the title suggests that perhaps magical secrets will be revealed, Sequin says, it's not going to happen. But, the audience will get an inside look at what it takes to create a musical.

"We're not exactly in a position we can put on a fully staged event with costumes and lighting," Sequin said. "This event is a group of people who are going to read through the script and sing through the music. It's going to be like a skeleton version of the show."

The story follows a magical royal family dealing with a curse placed on a family member which reveals the fact they are not the perfect family, but actually deeply dysfunctional.

The musical was a labor of love for the Bay City resident, combining two things he loves best.

"I've always been a theater and music person," he said. "It just seemed like a nice combination of things I love to do. It was a thought I had maybe 10 years ago. It's a very loosely adapted idea. I have this character called the Bard, come out to tell the story. I take liberties with it for sure."

The readings are appropriate for those high school age on up. Sequin says it is a soft PG-13.
