Three unique artists on display at Studio 23

Garrett Weslock hasn't had much sleep this past week.

As gallery curator for Studio 23/The Arts Center, it was his job to get everything in place for the Thursday opening of the Black & White exhibit, featuring three unique artists - Myles Roznowski with his pinhole photographs, Gregg Barckholtz with sculpture photos, and 25 of Weslock's sculptures.

The hard work paid off.

"Garrett did a good job," said Roznowski. "It all meshes together."

Not only is this Weslock's first big show, it is also the first time family and friends realized each piece was dedicated to one of them.

"Each piece is a portrait of people or a lesson they taught me," he said. "This is the first time they've seen them."

Mom Shelley Green couldn't have been more surprised at her sculpture entitled "Life Begins."

"It's the color of the sunrise," said Weslock. "The beginning of something new. She gave birth to me. The form, reaching in all directions, is the nurturing she had for me and my friends. She reaches out to everyone."

Before she knew it was dedicated to her, Green said this was her favorite of all her son's sculptures.

"I didn't know until tonight," she said. "I love the colors. It's so pretty."

Roznowski not only turns out unusual pieces of art using pinhole photography, he also builds the cameras he uses for his art.

"Each image is unique," he said. "I set up the camera and go away. It can take hours,"

Once he has the image, he heads into the dark room to develop the image before it is scanned into the computer for the final project.

This is Roznowski's first show in a major gallery.

"I'm happy to be with two other great artists," he said.

On hand for the night was one of Roznowski's former professors, Andrea Ondish, on the adjunct faculty at Saginaw Valley State University, and curator of education at the Marshall Frederick Sculpture Gallery at SVSU.

"I'm proud to see him showing his art at a gallery," she said. "His work is fantastic."

A photographer by trade, Barckholtz's pieces aren't for the casual observer.

On first glance, one might believe it is a photo of vegetation or a mix of colors, but a more careful look reveals a human under the mix.

It starts with a piece of nature," he said. "I see a plant and I know I want to do something with this. I get a subject and cover them with material. I'm basically doing sculpting and taking a photo of it."

Some of that material includes dyed cornstarch sandpapered artist chalk, and baby oil and silica sand. Barckholtz then dusts the subject using a makeup brush.

The series, entitled "Spellbound," came to life in January of 2015, when he smeared his daughter's face and hair with peanut butter, styling it with his hands.

His "art" is an outreach of his "bread and butter."

"I'm a portrait photographer," he said. "When digital photography came along I had to reinvent my craft."

The show runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday through Dec. 4, in the gallery at 901 N. Water St.
