OK, so you'd like to make a bunch of old Rotarians REALLY feel old? Just bring in a High School Robotics team and that should do just fine. The All Saints Central High School team is in their second year and already sound like budding engineers. Just listen to their titles, Lauren: head programmer and a member the drive team, Andrea: electrical, Trevor: mechanical, and Bret: spirit captain and mechanical.

The team is a winner in the FIRST robotics competition. FIRST promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) studies and draws over 400,000 students annually to their competitions. The motto is "Gracious Professionalism", which is defined as "playing in a way that would make your Grandmother proud."

Almost every High School in the area has a team. In their "rookie" year, the All Saints "Legend of Robotics" team got to the State level competition where they qualified for the World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.

"This is hands-on learning and problem solving on a totally different level than anything I've ever seen in a classroom," said Rotarian and All Saints Principal Brian Campbell. "This is real, intense competition that is inclusive, challenging, engaging, and fun. It is also the coolest thing I've ever seen in my educational career."

The All Saints team started in 2016 with 18 students. Today there are 28 students and 10 mentors. That first team was the only Bay City team to make state. They went on to World where they placed in the top 11%.

Robotics competition is not cheap. The budget, which the team showed in detail, totals over $32,700 per year. As a parochial school, All Saints does not qualify for State Funding provided by the Governor. They hold fundraisers and get grants and sponsors.

The demonstration by the students and their robot was a treat for all the Rotarians.
