Rotary Hears About CASA Program of the CAN Council
January 3, 2017
By: Stephen Kent
Randy Roberts
Randy Dee Roberts, CASA Program Director, talked to Rotary about this program of the Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN ) Council.
Established in 1979 in Saginaw, the CAN Council works to build communities "where children are free from abuse and neglect".
Roberts is director of the "Court Appointed special Advocates" (CASA) program, which started in the first years of 2000. The Saginaw CASA program was the first in Michigan to be accredited by the National CASA Association.
CASA Advocates are ordinary people making extraordinary contributions to the lives of abused and neglected children. CASAs are citizen volunteers, specially trained and appointed by family court judges to speak up for our most vulnerable children.
Randy talked about the various services provided by CASA and gave some examples of the work.
She described how CASA is referred to cases and how they interact with clients.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities for those who would like to work as a CASA. Randy answered a number of questions about those opportunities and CAN's relation to other organizations.
