Leeds Bird
Leeds Bird and Tara Welch talked to Rotary about the a-la-cARTe group in Bay City.

"A la cARTe is the name of a Bay County Group of eight organizations that make a very positive difference in out community", said Bird. The group was formed about ten years ago by Peggy and Paul Rowley, Dom Monastaire, and Yerome Yantz. They sat on the boards of foundations that were regularly approached by arts organizations for funds. They contacted Roger Meriweather of the Community Foundation and then arranged a meeting with the Bay Arts Council, the State Theatre and Studio 23 to discuss funding alternatives.

The first efforts looked at ideas like joint purchasing. That brought up such things as storage, distribution. Cooperation was difficult, even on things as mundane as toilet paper. "When you go from one location to another you discover that toilet paper is not always the same. They don't even take the same size toilet paper rolls!"

The original organizations met to discuss the shared issues. Soon the group grew to include The Bay City Players and the Historical Society. They met, but little else was done. In fact they did not have a goal or direction.

Over time these people came to the realization that it "was not a question of differences, it was a question of individual similarities" and that brought a-la-cARTe into a productive organization.

Today the group collaborates to promote all of the activities in the area. There are now eight organizations and more will soon be added. The group publishes a quarterly, large format "post card" that lists all of their events. Each group promotes the overall group on their individual web sites. The collaborate on other ideas, promotions and fund raisers.

Prior to addressing questions, Tara Welch listed a number of programs and events that the group has sponsored. Questions ranged from the connections to the Bay Arts Council, the history of arts in the Bay Aera, and what other groups may join a-la-cARTe.
