The program for the day featured Dave Smith of Midland, District Chair (and 12 year member) of the Youth Student Exchange committee. Dave outlined the program to club members and to the visiting students. He noted that although other cities in the district have sent students abroad as part of the program, Bay City has not sent a student in Smith's memory. He encouraged the club to promote the program.

The Rotary Central Stated Region, which includes our district 6310, sent over 300 students overseas last year and hosted over 300 coming to the States from foreign countries. Although Bay City has had no outbound students, the club has hosted inbound students each year.

The well organized program is open to students aged 15 to 18. The students program is designed around a three year program. Students participate in orientation and training events for the first year, they spend 11 months overseas in the second year, and they help other outbound students at home during their third year.

Students who have been recruited are selected in the Fall and do their orientation during the school year. The leave in July or August of the next year. Families cover the cost of the experience, which can run as much as $5,000. As one member noted, that may be less than it costs to keep your kid at home!

Following Smith's presentation, the club's current guest exchange student, Tulio Villar from Recife Brazil, spoke about his experience here in Bay City. SVSU student Lindsay Riddle spoke about her two years in the program. Her first year was in Thialand and her second year was in Denmark. Both students encouraged all of the vocational days students to consider the program.
