Spring Is Here - Clean Out Those Flower Beds!

City Begins Yard and Brush Waste Pickup

April 3, 2017
By: Stephen Kent

If the warm weather and spring showers were not enough to let you know that it's SPRING, then the City's announcement that they will begin yard waste and brush collection on April 3rd should be a hint.

You can read the official announcement and get information on the City's new and improved web site at www.baycitymi.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=45, but here's a summary from that page.

First, according to the ordinance, you can't mix yard waste and/or brush with household waste.

Secondly, you CANNOT put any yard waste "directly onto any curbside, street, right-of-way, alley or sidewalk" (When fall comes, DO NOT rake your leave into the street. Bay City may get there someday, but not yet).

In case you remember it, the city once put a truck at their Water Street location for pre-collection before the pickup season. That's no longer available. If you have questions, call the Solid Waste Division, at 894-8312.

Here are some guidelines you can use.

Yard Waste Collection:
Yard waste must be placed in:
  • paper Kraft bags

  • OR 32 gallon or less containers (with handles) that are marked YARD WASTE ONLY* and weigh no more 40 pounds. Stickers are available in Room 413 at City Hall. Park in the rear. (There's parking and an elevator near the back door.)

Plastic bags will not be collected.

Place your yard waste at the curb on your regular trash pick-up day.

Please don't put your bags out before your pick-up day. That's a violation of the ordinance and could get you a fee.

"Yard Waste" means grass clippings, sod and root balls (without dirt), leaves, weeds, plants, garden trimmings, twigs, and hedge and shrub clippings.

  • Brush Collection:
Crews work the first half the month (1st to 15th) on the East side of the river. The second half (16th to end of month) is for the West side.

    East Side Residents:
Put your brush out by the 1st of each month. Pickup runs from the 1st through 15th.

    West Side Residents:
Set brush out by the 15th of each month. Pickup runs from the 16th through the end of the month.

    Rules:
  • Stack brush neatly between curb and sidewalk with cut ends facing one direction.

  • Do not place brush piles near signs, poles and guy wires.

  • Brush to be collected must be no large than 5 inches in diameter and be free of mixed material.

  • City crews are not responsible for brush produced by contractors.

  • Larger amounts of brush, and limbs from a tree removal, requires that you hire a tree removal or landscape service. The City is not required to pick up that stuff.

  • So now you know. There's no excuse. Get out there and clean up that yard.
(At least that's what my wife told me.)
