Something's fishy, say Saginaw Bay sportsmen.

Bay City will be the focus of a growing protest against a proposal to allow commercial walleye netting in Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron.

Dan Eichinger, the Executive Director of the Michigan United Conservation Club (MUCC) has agreed to speak at a march event in Bay City on May 6, states the Saginaw Bay Walley Fishery Preservation Group, adding:

"This event is very important to the walleye fishing industry and we want to make sure as many people as possible attend our march. It is imperative that Lansing and the DNR know that the sportsmen/women of this state are against commercial fishing of walleye in our state waters."

"We the concerned sportsman of the Saginaw Bay Area, are marching to protest any new legislation, sponsored by Senator (Mike) Green, that would allow the commercial fishing industry to net walleye in the Saginaw Bay or Lake Huron," said Ralph Smith, one of the march leaders.

"We are also asking that the DNR classify Walleye and Lake Trout as sport fish and place them both on the sporting fish list."

The DNR has been negotiating a deal with the commercial fishers behind closed doors for the past six years, according to charter boat Capt. Terry Walsh. "The Great Lakes Citizens Fishery Advisory Committees have not been involved nor will they be involved in any discussions leading up to the draft Statute that will be shared with the Legislature."

The march will take place on Saturday, May 6th. Marchers will start gathering at the south end of Vet's park at 10:00 a.m. and begin the march at 12 noon. The march will proceed from the park, across the Vet's bridge to Saginaw St., then proceed north to Center and west into Wenonah Park.

As part of the agreement with the city of Bay City, no one will be allowed to walk on the road! Period. Everyone must stay on the sidewalk. Once in the park, we want to have two or three guest speakers, talking from 1-2 minutes each.

"We are seeking as many people as possible to march in order to show the DNR and Senator Green that we are serious about these issues. This will be a peaceful/respectful march and we hope everyone will act accordingly. We are asking for anyone who marches to make their own signs. Please keep in mind that profanity is not respectful.

"The DNR wants to re-write the commercial fishing laws, state-wide, not just for the Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron!" commented one sportsman involved in the march organization.
