Baby Animals At Sage Library

While driving to the Post Office the crowd in the park at Sage Branch Library was an attention getter. After getting the mail I pulled into the parking lot to check out "Farm Animal Fun".

For an event that was primarily publicized in the Library newsletter, the turnout was great. Besides the cars packed into the lot, there were parents and kids walking up from the neighborhood as well. You just can't have baby farm animals and not attract a crowd.

The animals came from Derek LeCronier Farm in Freeland. The owners were on hand to answer questions and help the kids feed the goats, sheep, calf, and rabbits. The animals were certainly cooperative. As one of the owners said, "the pygmy goats have learned that they can jump on the backs of the larger animals to get closer to the kids and feed."

One of the real treats was a two-day-old baby pygmy goat. Goats, like horses and calves, are up on their feet almost immediately after being born. This cutie, only two days old and about the size of a house cat, was prancing around the pen like an experienced trooper.

So if you're driving by the library one day and see a crowd of kids and a large animal trailer, stop in. It's worth the time to see the (human) kids having a great time.

The pygmy goats were definitely cute, but the larger goats and sheep were better at getting the feed.

When not feeding the animals, there were crafts and activities.

Bunnies are so soft!

The goats and sheep liked a handful of grass as much the grain.

You just can't resist those animals.

The two-day-old baby pygmy goat was hardly larger than a house cat.

And the baby was a constant subject of photos.
