Library Launches 1000 Books Before Kindergarten® Program

It's never too early to start reading! The Bay County Library System is proud to announce it has launched a new, self-paced reading program for ages birth through preschool. 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten® is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. Research shows the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. It not only helps close the vocabulary gap and prepares children to enter school, but also promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

This ongoing reading program may be started at any time, but must be completed before the child begins Kindergarten. By reading just one book per night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in under three years, while providing children essential early literacy skills. Each child will receive their own logo book bag when they register at the library, plus earn a small prize for every 100 books read.

To kick off the program, BCLS is inviting children of all ages to attend a free musical performance by The Merry Music Maker! Registration is required in person, online, or by phone.
