Detroit Lions 2006 Head Coach - Rod Marinelli

The 2006 Detroit Lions' Footbal Schedule is out.

Guess What?

No Monday night games. Imagine that! The general public is not interested in watching the Lions play anybody on Monday night.

The Thanksgiving Day opponent? The (9-7) Miami Dolphins . . . Why am I not excited? Does Marino still play for Miami? Csonka? O.J.?

The combined Won/Lost Record of this year's Lions' opponents is a meager 99W, 112L or a percentage of .469

But the Lions W/L record over the past five years is an even more dismal 21W, 59L . . . an embarrassing .356 percentage. There's a new coach - Rod Marinelli.

Everything you need to know about new Lions' Football Coach, Rod Marinelli . . .

Rod Marinelli (born July 13, 1949 in Rosemead, California) is the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Marinelli's coaching career began in 1973 as an assistant at Rosemead (Calif.) High School. Serving as an assistant at Utah State from 1973-1982, he moved on to the California Golden Bears for nine seasons.

He was then on staff with Arizona State University for three seasons and the University of Southern California for one season in 1995.

He went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1996 and was the defensive line coach for six seasons. The past four seasons, he also had the title of assistant head coach. On January 18, 2006, Marinelli was named the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Bye Bye Joey . . .

Joey Harrington will be gone before the season begins. Unknown Josh McCown and the well-traveled Jon Kitna will be competing the the starting QB job. Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator.

The Lions have the ninth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Here's a link to a mock draft from CNN Sports Illustrated sports writer Don Banks. According to Banks, Texas QB Vince Young will still be available when it's time for the Lions to step up. But Banks suggests that the Lions choose a defensive cornerback.

According to Banks, "Despite signing both Jon Kitnaand Josh McCown in free agency, the Lions could be tempted by the still-available Vince Young or Jay Cutler. But after going for offense in the first round so often in recent years, with meager results, Detroit should think defense and take the draft's highest-rated cover man."

Prediction: The Lions will open the season 0-2, dropping the home opener to the Seahawks and then will be stomped by the Bears in Chicago.

But an impressive 8-game winning streak will bring them to our Thanksgiving table on November 23rd with an 8-2 record. I love Thanksgiving. It's such an upbeat holiday.
