Henry Reyna
Henry Reyna of Secure Solution LLC, a 34-year veteran law enforcement officer who specializes in training and the tools needed to protect yourself and your family from those who would do them harm, spoke to Rotary about "Responding to Acts of Violence".

Reyna noted that he is now retired and runs his own training company. He says a benefit of retiring is that his voice has been freed and he can speak freely about the realities of violent situations and give his personal opinions.

Among the realities is the fact that there are less police today than ever before. In an area like Bay City, there may be only a handful of officers on duty at any time and they may be occupied in another situation if you call for help. It's up to individuals to increase their situational awareness and learn tactics to avoid, survive and escape dangerous situations.

Another reality is the number of shootings is increasing. Reyna showed a map that showed the number of shootings with red circles. Starting with a small number in 2003, the maps progressed through 2014 the number of spots grew to encompass most of the country.

Reyna talked about the "OODA Loop", a protocol based on the science of winning and developed by a top military commander. The acronym means simply
  • Observe
  • Orient
  • Decide
  • Act
Reyna asked people to look around. Find the exits. Look at people. Think ahead about what you might do if something happened. Can you get out quickly. Is there a secondary exit. Where could you hide. What weapons are at hand.

People can't handle every emergency on their own, but far too often victims are people who just froze or did nothing. If the opportunity presents itself, or if there is no other option, people acting alone or together may the the best approach to a violent situation.

    CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Remember Vocation Day is next Tuesday. Sponsored in cooperation with the Morning Club, we expect a large number of students at the Doubletree. Let's have a large number of Rotarians too!

The board met today. Brenda Scramlin continues the work to start a Roteract club for young people. A "red badge" program is being planned for recognizing new members. The Pinconning Club held it's 10th anniversary meeting last week and two Bay City Rotarians attended.

Chuck Cusick reported on the Guatemala project's history and current phase. After discussion, the board voted to add $3,000 to the already budgeted $2,000 toward that project.

The RI President has asked each club to plant 80 trees this year. Harvey Schneider is chairing that project and he reported on what he's learned, including the input from Mike Stoner of Pinconning. The current thought is to purchase and package seedlings and distribute these to students to do the actual planting.

The Dictionary and Thesaurus project is in progress. If you can deliver books to schools please see Ann Grady to sign up.

The club welcomes new inductees Rick Ray and Ginger Drzewicki, who were inducted on Tuesday.

Tickets are still available for the Foundation Gala in Frankenmuth scheduled for November 17. See Bob or Cindy Chadwick if you want to attend.

Next summer's International Convention will be in Toronto, an easy trip for many of us. Be sure you sign up with her if you can make this life-changing Rotary experience.

Connie Schweitzer presented Paul Harris pins to three members today. Linda Heemstra becomes a PH+8 fellow. Lee Newton and Jeff Yantz both became PH+1 fellows. Congratulations to each of these member and the club thanks them for their support of the Rotary International Foundations and the Paul Harris Fellowship.
