Jill Armentrout, development director for Great Lakes Bay Health Centers spoke to Rotary last Tuesday about the mission and impact of her organization.
Great Lakes Bay Health Centers (formerly Health Delivery, Inc.) was founded in 1969. The mission at the time was based on a grant to the Saginaw County Health Department to provide health care to farmworkers.
Over the years, the center has grown from primarily assisting migrant workers to an organization that has over 440 employees and serves 50,000 patients. They are now one of the largest federally qualified community health centers in the state.
The center provides excellent health care to individuals and communities, especially those who are underserved, uninsured or underinsured. The modern, fully equipped and staffed centers are found inside a number of hospitals and healthcare centers. They also operate from their own buildings.
Because transportation is a major problem for many who need their services, the center has their own transportation service for patients. They also operate a large, walk-in Mobile Medical unit and three similar Mobile Dental units. School-based health centers are located in Arthur Hill and Saginaw High schools.
Staff Doctors ensure the highest quality of service. The center says that they deliver 60% of all babies delivered in the state. A new service addresses behavioral health issues.
The center holds tours and learning events open to the public. The next event will be March 14 from 5:30 to 6:30. For more information contact Jill Armentrout at (989) 751-8866 or send e-mail to
