Visitors try sweep rowing at Rowing Club's Learn To Row Day
Learn To Row at Bay City Rowing Club
Local club holds annual free "Learn To Row Day" and open house.

The Bay City Rowing Club has scheduled it's sixth annual "Learn to Row Day" for Saturday May 13, 2006. The day is celebrated in conjunction with the US Rowing Association's "National Learn to Row Day" promotion.
The main events at "Learn To Row Day" are free clinics offered to anyone who wants to see what rowing is all about. The club's certified instructors will offer two two organized "sweep rowing" clinics, one at 10:00 am and a second at 2:00 pm. The coaches and other club members will be on hand all day to answer questions.
"Learn to Row Day is a great opportunity to explore the sport of rowing", says club president Scott Hardy. "The event is open to the public and it's free. All equipment is provided. Just bring yourself. Dress as you would for any outdoor activity, appropriate for the weather. It's highly unlikely that you'll get wet, but you may get splashed and your feet will probably get wet. There's a locker room in the clubhouse in case you want to change. Reservations are not required... just show up ready to have a good time!"
The event is held at the club's Victorian style boathouse on the middle grounds across from the Boys and Girls Club. Morning snacks, bottled water, and afternoon hotdogs will be provided. Anyone under 18 years of age will require parent or guardian approval and a signed liability waiver.
The Bay City Rowing Club is a non-profit community club. The club was formed in the early 1990's and the clubhouse was built shortly after. Membership is open to anyone and requires onlythe payment of annual dues. New members must demonstrate that they are qualified to use the boats and other equipment. Classes are offered at several levels from novice to advanced. Qualified members are given keys to the clubhouse ane are entitled touse any of the club's equipment provided safety rules are followed.
Each summer groups of members team up to form boat crews. These crews train and row recreationally in the evenings and mornings. Some crews make a point of going to regattas where they compete for prizes. This year a new Saginaw Rowing club has formed. Members anticipate organizing some competitions with that club this summer.
The BCRC boathouse is also home to the Bay Central High School Crew which has been in continuous operation for over 12 years. The crew typically has 15 to 25 co-ed members each year and travels to rowing competitions around Michigan andneighboring states.
