SVSU College of Business and Management Dean Speaks to Rotary

May 8, 2018
By: Stephen Kent

Dean Anthony Bowrin
Anthony Bowrin, Dean of the SVSU College of Business and Management (CBM) about the program and the new building they anticipate building soon. As Dean Bowrin styled it, the college will be "A catalyst for regional economic impact".

As a program accredited by the AACSB, the CBM is one if fewer than 5% of the worlds 13,000 business programs to achieve that mark. These schools "produce graduates that are highly skilled and more desirable to employers than other non-accredited schools".

The CBM offers eight majors, nine minors, and two certificates. Programs include the "Vitito Global Leadership Institute", the "Cardinal Business Edge", and the "Dow Entrepreneurship Institute" and the "Stevens Center for Family Business".

Bowrin talked about the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC). For students with a love for manufacturing and a love for Michigan, this presents a unique opportunity.

The CBM will soon break ground on a large new building which will contain facilities including
  • Big data and finance trading lab
  • Consumer Behavior Lab
  • Innovation Lab
The building also includes space for classes, seminars, a C-suite board room, collaboration spaces, and accommodation for other centers.

This new center will make a visual impact on the University and will become a focal point for the many advanced business offerings.

MAY IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH

Rotary is an intimate affiliation of carefully selected business and professional people, having as its objective the promotion of high ethical standards in private, commercial and civic life, and dedicated to the ideal that the basis of all worthy endeavor is unselfish service.
Rotary Induction Rite
Rotary International is the oldest, and one of the largest service clubs in the world. Rotary Club members are part of a diverse group of professional leaders working to address various community and international service needs. Through community service and other means, Rotary Club members help promote peace and understanding throughout the world.

Members are a club's most important asset. They are the force that allows Rotary to carry out its many humanitarian efforts and achieve its mission.

Rotary membership is by invitation of local clubs. At a recent meeting, the Bay City Noon Rotary membership gathered around tables for a brainstorming session to discuss potential new members.

The Membership Committee, after reviewing the names and removing duplicates, developed a consolidated list of prospects. That list was presented in subsequent weeks and members were asked to review the names and identify prospects that they could invite to a meeting during May, the club's membership month.

Anyone living or working in the Bay City area who would like to be considered for membership in the Bay City club is invited to contact any club member for more information.

For information on membership in any Rotary club, visit www.Rotary.org and complete a Prospective Member Contact form on the "About Us" page. Rotary International (RI) will forward your information to clubs in your area.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Due to scheduling problems, the club met at the Doubletree Restaurant on Tuesday. Although they did not anticipate Rotary showing up, the Doubletree staff went out of their way to accommodate the club for both the board meeting at 11:00 and the regular meeting at noon.

Brenda Scramlin reported on the success of the first Mitten State Music Revival which was held at the Historic Masonic Temple on May 5th. The event was very well attended. Visitors wandered from room to room and through the concession area. With 20 bands rotating through four large rooms, there was plenty to see and hear.

Reporting on the board meeting, President-elect Harvey Schneider reported that the President 3 years out has been selected. Carrie Strohkirch will serve for the 2020-21 term. Tara Welch follows Harvey for the 2019-20 term.

After considerable discussion, the club will change software beginning with the 2019-20 term. The Club Runner used by many clubs will be implemented.

The board voted to increase the club dues to $112 per 6-month cycle. That is $1 per month and will help offset increases from Rotary International and other expenses.

A change in the by-laws has been proposed to add term limits for the secretary and treasurer. Secondly, the full dues billing and the collection will be moved to the treasurer. The full proposal may be read in the member's section of the club website. The changes are marked in red. The membership has 10 days to review these before being asked to vote.

Tara reported on the community grants that were approved by the board. Of 20 applications, five were received. Normally the committee approves $5,000 two times a year. Using money left over from the first term, $6,400 was approved this time. The approvals were:
United Way $1,100
Studio 23 $1,100
Faith Lutheran School $2,000
St. John's Lutheran School $1,000
Literacy Council $1,200

Tim Holsworth chairman of the Golf Outing repeated the date of June 25, 2018. The event will be held at Maple Leaf Golf Course again this year.

In a new plan, each team will be able to select a non-profit organization that has a team playing that day. At the end of the outing, one name will be drawn from a pot and that organization will receive $1000 to use as they see fit.

Since every team gets to submit a name, if 10 teams select the same organization it means that that name will go in the pot 10 times. The more times the name is in the pot, the better the chance they will win!

Frank Janca, chair of the Social Committee, reminded the club that the next social will be at the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club on May 30 from 5:15 to 7:30. Hor d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be featured. Plan to sign up next week. And bring a guest!

Next summer's International Convention will be in Toronto, an easy trip for many of us. Be sure you sign up with her to attend this life-changing Rotary experience. The fee for that event will go up by $80 on the first of April. If you plan to go the time to make your reservation is now.
