Rotary Hosts Students On Annual Vocational Day

December 11, 2018
By: Stephen Kent

Over 100 Vocational Day Students Fill Room

Morning Rotarian Matt Felan and Noon Rotarian Trevor Keyes organized Vocational Day again this year. Coordinating with area High School counselors, businesses, Delta College, and McLaren Bay Medical, they arranged for well over one hundred local students to job shadow local employers and see what the work world is really like. The majority of the students were juniors, with a smaller number of seniors and a few sophomores.

McLaren hosted the most students followed by Delta. Many other businesses hosted smaller numbers, including the sheriff's office where students got a "ride-along". Some students who went to McLaren were able to witness events like surgery and even a cesarean birth.

Matt Felan
Matt Felan, President and CEO of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance, was the keynote speaker for the day. In his always upbeat talk, Matt told the students some of what they can expect as they enter adulthood and their working lives and gave them some pointers to keep in mind.

The first bit of advice was to finish strong. Your junior year is not the time to take your foot off the gas. You may feel that you're at the end, but in truth, you're just beginning. So keep focused and always finish strong.

Secondly, don't be afraid to fail. Failing is a part of learning. How you react is the key. You can take the attitude that you're going to fail at something anyway so it doesn't matter. Or you can decide that you're going to succeed and that if you do fail, it's just a learning step.

Be Better!. Every day. If you see a bit of trash on the floor, pick it up and throw it away. If you see someone being bullied, step in and say "stop it, we don't need that". Include those who are left out. Basically, "if it needs doing, DO IT!"

You're going to get a job soon. Don't just assume you have to do what someone else tells you to do. Do what you like. If you do that you'll never "work" a day in your life.

REMEMBER, social media follows you FOREVER! If you post something, it will be found. Today, the first thing prospective employers do is to check social media. What may seem fun or "private" now, will come back down the road and could derail everything you've worked for. Don't let five seconds now ruin your life for the next 35 years.

Lastly, remember your home. Matt related how he grew up in Bay City then got out of here as soon as he could. He went to Washington D.C. and an exciting career and life. But when he and his wife started their family they quickly knew they had to come home. He says this is the greatest place to live, work, and raise your kids. Bay City will always be home!
