Studio 23 Update Presented at Rotary

January 8, 2019
By: Stephen Kent

Tara Welch
Rotary met Tuesday after 2 weeks off for the holidays, which both happened to land on a Tuesday this year.

Tara Welch, Executive Director of Studio 23 / The Arts Center, talked to Rotary about the Studio's upcoming 60th anniversary and the $415,000 renovation now being implemented.

Many Rotarians were surprised that Studio 23 is 60 years old. (Many remember when it was founded). Tara shows slides of the various homes of the Studio, from the little red school on Knight Road to Thomas Jefferson School and City hall, and finally the current home on the ground floor of the Jennison Building downtown.

In recent years Public Art has been a major outreach of the Studio. Collaborating with Leadership Bay County, a huge logo was painted onto the street at the entrance to Wenona Park. Murals were painted on the public walks under the ends of Veteran's Bridge downtown. Other river art, historic photos, and art can be found throughout the downtown area.

More traditional programs take place at the Studio's downtown facilities. There are regular art shows in the gallery. Classes for every age take place continually. Upstairs is a full clay studio with everything a clay artist could want. Clay classes teach basics to professional level clay techniques.

The renovation project is an exciting next step for the Studio. When the Jennison studio was opened it seemed so large. Now, with expanded programs and activities, the space needs a re-think. The renovation will add class space, rearrange offices, and generally improve the way space is used. New carpet will better address the realities of art class work. The carpet, along with ceiling and wall treatments will address issues with acoustics.

Everyone seems to agree that Studio 23 is a jewel in the heart of Bay City. After 60 years, the evolution continues and the next stage is about to begin.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The February 12 Board Meeting
will be held a week later

We'll meet again on February 19, 2019.

The Chamber of Commerce will be holding it's State of the Community program at the Doubletree on February 12, the same time as the Rotary Meeting. Since many members want to attend that meeting, the Board decided to cancel the regular Tuesday Rotary meeting and postpone the monthly Board meeting. Anyone who attends the Chamber event can turn in a Rotary Makeup for the meeting.

The club celebrated December Birthday's a little later than usual. Happy Birthday, Rotarians!

A note to all members. Dues invoices for the January to June term have been e-mailed. Please take care of this as soon as possible. If you did NOT receive our invoice, please contact the secretary.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute", Dee Dee Wacksman, who has been to three Rotary International Conventions, talked about the House of Friendship that is always featured to showcase the hundreds and thousands of projects that local clubs and districts, worldwide, and the Foundation undertake. She then outlined the methods a Rotarian can support the Foundation. This includes the Bequest Society which enables a Rotarian to make a bequest to be paid after they are gone. One method is to take out a bank CD which will grow and eventually go to the Foundation. It's a painless way to make a difference that outlasts the individual.
