MOVIE REVIEW: "A Madea Family Funeral"
March 7, 2019
By: Kathy Rupert-Mathews
We saw "A Madea Family Funeral."
It was cute.
Written and directed by Tyler Perry, it was fun. It's PG-13. The beginning seems a little too risqué. However, in hindsight, there was no nudity or swearing. There were definitely sexual innuendos.
It starts with siblings and in-laws planning a surprise anniversary party for their parents. There is arguing of course but you get an idea of each of their personalities right away. However, what starts as a party turns into a wake when the husband dies during illicit sex. It's discovered by 8 of the people of the family and everyone is trying to keep it from his wife. Madea plans the marathon funeral that is hurried along by a quickly moving clock. Towards the end of the movie, Madea makes a speech about love and commitment that really should be heard by all young people and couples. The audience clapped when she finished.
The actors all have excellent comic timing when needed. Tyler Perry plays Madea, Brian, Joe, and Heathrow. Cassie Davis and Patrice Lovely are hilarious as the aunts. The rest are also the regular entourage you see in "Madea movies." Tyler Perry said this is the last movie for Madea.
She's retiring. She will be missed.
So go. Have fun. Eat popcorn.
