MOVIE REVIEW: "POMS" Is a Good, Funny, Sad Movie

"Poms." .... A good, comfortable, funny, sad movie.

Diane Keaton plays Martha, an older retired lady with cancer. She gets rid of everything and moves into a retirement village in a warm climate. She meets Cheryl, played by Jackie Weaver. Their relationship starts out strangely but turns into "family."

Residents are required to join one of the groups (cards, tennis, walking, book club, etc) but neither one can find anything they like. Consequently they decide to start a cheering club. Rhea Perlman is Alice. Pam Grier is Olive. Phyllis Somerville, Patricia French, Ginny MacColl, and Carol Sutton round out the rest of the squad.

They blackmail a high school cheerleader, played by Alisha Boe, into helping them and the rest is history.

The acting is good. The directing is well done. Zara Hayes does an excellent job of letting us relate to the ladies and the difficulties they face.

So go. Have fun. Eat popcorn.
