Squirrel Haven at Battery Park

Meet Molly & Chrystal

June 9, 2006
By: Julie McCallum, Entertainment Editor

Battery Park on Center Avenue in Bay City is the home of "Molly" the squirrel along with another squirrel, Bud and all their squirrel friends.

Chrystal Short, Branch Manager of TitleQuest of Bay City, is the caregiver for Molly and has been feeding the squirrel since TitleQuest relocated to 509 Center in February 2005.

Short says, "She (Molly) came up to me the very first day and I've been feeding her ever since. She will take peanuts right out of my hand."

"The name "Molly" just hit me one day," Short said. "I call her mate "Bud". I feed her once a day unless she comes to the door at 3:00 PM wanting more. I always feed her twice on Fridays," Short added.

"If I don't see her in the front yard, all I have to do is call her, and she comes to me. The other squirrels are getting smart too, because when I call Molly they all know its dinner time. "

It appears that this squirrel is very spoiled and well-cared for. Chrystal stocks up on peanuts in the shell. Short claims these are Molly's favorite. But not just any old peanuts for Molly, Chrystal heads to St. Laurent Brothers Nut House, downtown on Water Streetand buys an 8 pound bag of peanuts in the shell for her "Molly."

"It's fun to watch her, she will also bury the peanuts around the yard and she stays in the radius of Battery Park. If I see her heading across the street, I'll call her and she listens to me and comes back." said Short

"I think she just had babies, so she's being very protective of them right now."
