Few things are more fun, and more frustrating, for a photographer than a good fireworks show, and few shows can beat the Bay City Fourth of July Fireworks Festival for providing great vantage points for taking pictures and having lots to take pictures of.

It's not hard to get some pictures, but getting distinctive ones, and preserving color, and telling a story, can be a challenge. Everyone's got their own method. We saw video cameras, big rigs with mighty lenses, tiny digitals, even cell phone cameras held high over the head. We used our new Sony R1 digital and were very happy with the results.

True to form, we collected a couple of hundred shots at this year's Fourth of July Fireworks Festival. Some were pretty good, others we won't talk about. Here is a sample of some of our favorites. These are lower resolution for the Internet. If you want to see an original at 4 meg, drop us an e-mail.

And be sure to check the Photo of the Day feature (linked at the top of this page) for other festival pictures.

Not everything at a fireworks show is what you expect. Right after this commercial break we'll show you something just a little more unusual.

We'll be right back.

And now for that unusual approach we promised.
These shots are what came out of the camera.
No photoshop doctoring has been used.

OK, everyone asks, so we'll tell you how it's done.

The camera is on a tripod and is set for a 1 second exposure. When the shutter button is pushed, the photographer smoothly, but quickly, turns the zoom ring.

Oh yeah, that white streak in the upper right of the last two? Just the moon, nothing more.

If you like these effects and want to see some others, drop us an e-mail.
