Great article OJ. Although I didn't play for Vince ( he left when I was
becoming a freshman) I had numerous dealing with him in grade school.
We won
the Parochial football league my 8th grade year. We went unbeaten and
unscored upon, our closest game being a 0-0 tie to St. Boniface who had
Dennis Wirgowski, Tom Kennel and a number of other BC Central standouts.
A
very glowing and somewhat embarrassing article was written about me after our
win under the lights(1st time ever) vs St. Joe's at their field.
Coach Zappone
pulled me out of class the next day and put everything in perspective for
me. He told me of his expectation for me in the near future (humility not
easy for a kid at that age) and my role as a leader.
I'll never forget how
impressed I was that he took the time to speak to me and give me direction.
I was very fortunate to have a interested father and mother in my life. I
can't imagine the impact he's had on so many young men who have played for
him that didn't have the support system I was fortunate to have at home.
Some people just don't understand the importance that Athletics and Coaches
in particular can have on individuals.
Thanks for a great article OJ
