History of the Shillelagh night started when the grounds committee, which consisted of a small group of dedicated parishioners who would have to carry buckets of water to care for the flowers and the bushes that they had planted.
There were no outside water spikets to make their volunteer time very easy for such a small group.
Permission was then asked to have "Shillelagh Casino night" to help pay for the much needed sprinkler system.
St. Mary's has since been awarded with a certificate and a picture in the Bay City Times from the city for their beautiful grounds.
After the event was so successful the committee thought of the many things that the parish needed, but with such a tight budget could not afford and began to make a list.
It was decided that the floor in St. Patricks Hall was most needed as constant re-cementing of the tiles that were coming up and the danger of someone getting injured was a real possibility. With charity events in the hall, the floor needed to be addressed.
The proceeds from this "Shillelagh January Thaw Beach Party" is to pay for the remaining renovations of St. Patrick's Hall. These renovations will be a beautiful compliment to the new renovations and additions that have already taken place to the remainder of the church.
The hall is used for many parish functions as well as for benefits for the needy. "We are proud of the work that the Shillelagh committee with the help of parishioners has contributed to St. Mary's" said, DeLorge.
None of the funds used for the St. Patrick's Hall renovations have come from the general fund. Donations have come from parishioners, former parishioners, families in memory of a loved one as well as others in the community who enjoy the events the committee has sponsored.
