High School Students from all of the area schools were hosted at businesses as part of the club's annual Vocation Days. Students visited Chemical Bank, Bangor Veterinary Clinic, various departments at Bay Regional Medical Center, and other businesses to get a look at what careers in those fields might offer.
Each student was introduced to the club and asked to stand for recognition. President Gena Gates then gave a short description of what Rotary is about and the work that Rotary Club's do throughout the world.
Rob Monroe then described the Rotary youth exchange program. Primarily designed for high school juniors and seniors, the program also offers opportunities for students who have just graduated. At a recent presentation to the club, the program was characterized as a perfect experience to have between high school and the first year of collect. A recent RI president was quoted as saying "if every 17 year old in the world could experience a year of living in another country, it would be the end of wars."
This year's Bay City exchange student to Bay City is Guido Gargiullo from Rome. Guido spoke to the assembled students and answered questions about his experience.
Monroe suggested that all of the students should consider a year in the exchange program. He addressed the costs and the requirements. He also noted that it is very important to work with the school counselors to be sure that all graduation requirements of their high school can be met if they take a year off to study abroad.
The second Vocation Day will be held next Tuesday.
