True Dental Emergencies Warrant Immediate Medical Attention

Dental Emergency vs. Non-Emergency:

Listed are true dental emergencies that warrant emergency room attention if West Bay Dental is not available.

* Knocked-Out Tooth: if the tooth is dirty rinse it gently in warm water, but do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If this is not possible place the tooth in a cup of milk or place under the tongue. This is a true dental emergency.

* Toothache: if you are in excruciating pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night and no over-the-counter pain reliever helps, you have a true dental emergency.

* Swelling: if you have significant swelling, you have a true dental emergency.

However, if your crown or temporary crown comes off you can put it back on temporarily with Poly-Grip or toothpaste. It is important that you do this immediately and as often as needed, but keep in mind this is not a true emergency.

If you have a chipped tooth and you are not experiencing any pain, you do not have a true dental emergency. It is important to differentiate between pain and sensitivity. Pain is something that does not go away and is not tolerable. Sensitivity is something comes and goes. It is irritating but manageable.
