Environmental stewardship of Saginaw Bay and the Great Lakes is the mission of BaySail, the non-profit organization that operates the two Appledore schooners berthed in Bay City.

Corporate sponsors are sought for the Windward Bound youth Tall Ship sailing program to the East Coast underway this summer aboard the two Appledores.

This program welcomes youths age 14-18 as part of its sail training crews, financed in part by a $10,000 grant from the American Sail Training Association (ASTA).

The 65-foot long Appledore V is sailing to Nova Scotia, including five days in Halifax, during two weeks of ASTA Tall Ship port visits. Other stops will be in Port Hawksbury and Sydney, N.S.

The ship is making a 4,000 mile voyage through Lakes Huron, Ontario and Erie, the St. Lawrence River and into the Atlantic Ocean, said BaySail Executive Director Roger Nugent.

Appledore IV, an 85-foot-long vessel, is currently on a 17-day voyage to make visits to maritime festivals at two Lake Michigan ports, Kenosha and Port Washington, Wisconsin.

Youth trainees sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities are joining the crew during these voyages.

The ship is available for public sails and dockside tours while berthed at the Wisconsin ports.

At each port BaySail will set up an interactive water quality display to inform visitors of Great Lakes environmental issues and promote the Saginaw Bay area.

Mr. Nugent said the organization is seeking teacher volunteers as instructors in the Science Under Sail program. Interested teachers may contact Mr. Nugent at BaySail, 107 Fifth Ave., Bay City, MI 48708, phone 989-895-5193, or by accessing http://www.baysailbaycity.org
